Location: Fontana, California
Date Completed: 2009

Project Scope

Venture Engineering & Construction was contracted to provide design drawings for a new walking beam reheat furnace for California Steel Industries in Fontana, California. In 1993, CSI began a capital expenditure program of some $250 million to modernize and add operations. Investments included the new walking beam coil handling system and cooling pond in their Hot Strip Mill. This transports coils to either the finishing facilities or the cooling pond in high-speed coils cars protecting the coil from damage.

Services Provided

Venture began by assisting Core with the design of the furnace box and ancillary structures required to support the furnace during future major seismic events. An element of complexity was added by Core’s decision to fabricate components both stateside and in China, with the associated impact on units and shapes.

Venture used AutoCAD Inventor to modify Core’s base model and to prepare 2D detail drawings of the interconnecting panels, beams, doors, and “loose” pieces that make up the furnace’s sidewalls, endwalls, and ancillary structures. Venture’s understanding of the software facilitated the transformation of Core’s model into drawing that can be readily used by the steel detailer and fabricator of the furnace box. All of the work on this project was completed on-time and within budget.
