Dave Todd – Automation Manager

Automation Engineering is affected by technology advances more than most other engineering specialties. Dave Todd entered the industry in the 1980s, when working in Automation meant carrying a massive computer workstation around for projects to replace relay panels with a single PLC.

Since starting, Mr. Todd witnessed and experienced how competitive and ever-changing the industry is. “I probably studied more out of college than I ever did while at school, both learning in the industry and taking night classes.” Continued education via classes and independent research is necessary to keep up with the evolution of technology and the need for a broader knowledgebase.

Mr. Todd received his Petroleum Engineering Bachelors of Science degree from Penn State University and while working in the gas industry, he took night classes to receive his Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Todd spent the first few years of his 27-year career in the Natural Gas Industry, and then moved on to the Metals Industry. Recently, he’s expanded his field into Wastewater and Landfill Gas to Energy here at Venture Engineering.

In terms of goals, Mr. Todd is focused on developing his department. “I’ve been asked to grow an Automation group in a young company with its hands in numerous industries. I plan to grow the department to 25 people in five years and also use Automation as a path for developing new Process and Construction Engineering projects.”
